Location
Hangdong, Chiang Mai, Thailand
The Project
Joe House is a two-storey residential villa that was developed after a strict feasibility and concept-design stage to test the massing plans, responsiveness to the climate, and space-efficiency. The plan makes use of small grid structure combined with deep cantilevered roof overhangs and timber screens.
The design of the building is designed to maximize daylight and privacy to the occupants, which guarantees the high standards of residential performance and the sustainability of the operations of this building in a tropical city environment.
The Architectural Threshold
The frontal elevation is expressed as a stratified entrance point, which helps to mediate the entrance to the public street to the personal interior. The upper level has a screened volume that is placed above a shaded carport and recessed entry sequence and manipulates a material palette of timber fins and woven panels to intelligently regulate the exposure to solar radiation and the visual exposure.
It is intended to create a domestic scale of the familiar type, and it accomplishes the essential technical role of managing the rainwater and defining the clarity of the structure.
